The Piping On the Cake

We came across this fantastically informative article on piping words onto frosting.  It discusses the kinds of icing most suited to piping, how to space words on the cake, as well as many other helpful tips.

A proper stance when piping is essential in order to remain steady and create a smooth line.  It’s also worth practicing on cardboard or other surface to see how much room words will take.  There’s nothing worse than finding your cake only has room for “Congratulatio.” And speaking of spelling, be sure you triple check your own to avoid unwanted comedy or embarrassment.  This includes the spelling of people’s names, long words (“anniversary”) and the location of apostrophes and other punctuation.  Oftentimes, beginning cake decorators are so focused on their technique, they overlook these things. Mistakes can be tricky to fix, particularly in frosting so as the saying goes: “Measure twice. Cut once.”

That said, there are no hard and fast rules.  The article suggests that if cursive writing is not your strong suit, you can print words on the cake instead.  It’s the presentation and the message that counts.
